I remember walking through the Monastery and was struck by the Novice and the Elder Monk carrying water to the kitchen. The focus of light on their path seemed to say their duty was timeless and that hauling water, the basis of life, was part of life's natural rhythm. The Elder monk wore the expression of the countless times he completed this task, while the Novice displayed a youthful energy in learning the ropes. I had been wanting to paint this scene for some time and finally felt able to do it once I decided how to crop the one monk in order to feature the other. This painting was my last large work completed before I moved to our new home in Colorado, where we also haul fresh water to our storage cistern.
